Dutch to honor prostitutes with statue
by James L. Lambert
A Dutch news service reports that the city of Amsterdam has authorized that a statue honoring prostitution will be constructed in the city. The license granted by the city says a bronze statue will be located in the Oudekerksplein square, which is in the De Wallen ‘red light’ district of Amsterdam. It is uncertain who will pay for its construction.
Mariska Majoor, a spokeswoman for the commissioning of the statue, said in a prepared statement: “In a lot of countries, people do not have a shred of respect for prostitutes. The statue is to offer support to all those men and women.” The statue, according to Majoor, “is a tribute to all prostitutes all over the world.”
Majoor is a former prostitute. She currently works for the Prostitute Inform-ation Center (PIC), a prostitute advocacy group in Amsterdam. It is expected that the statue will be unveiled in either March or April. According to Majoor, the statue will feature a woman “standing straddle-legged on some steps in a doorway with her hands on her hips.” (NIS news)
Calls to the Dutch Consultant in New York and in Washington, DC were made for their comment on this story. No one was available for comment.
Nevertheless, former DOJ consultant Judith Reisman, Ph.D. did have a lot to say about city of Amsterdam’s cooperation with the PIC to build a statue honoring prostitutes. Reisman said today that “some would argue, and fairly, I suspect, that the Dutch prostitute statue is a brazen government advertise-ment to increase the growing sex traffic in Holland. Certainly, Dutch leaders should know that most prostituted males and females are early sex abuse and/ or incest victims.” Reisman continued by saying that “these officials are clearly not driven to make Holland safe and humane for women and children … these closeted hypocrites are the real prostitutes.”
In the 1980s Reisman was appointed by the Reagan administration to act as a
consultant for the Department of Justice’s 1986 pornography commission. She is currently working on the release of a new book.
